This list is not complete by any measure. But it provides you with number of pointers you can start from. E-trade, Yahoo, CNN-fn, Infoseek, etc. are doing links for living.  You might use those services as well. The classification I use is not very precise. But it is good enough for task we (you) have.

What Every Investor Should Know A Handbook from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

For Top-Down approach:

For summary of Macroeconomic news:

Dismal Scientist is VERY GOOD site

State of the Economy according to Dr. T.

Dr Yardeni is Chief Investment Strategist of Deutsche Bank Securities in New York His Web site is really nice and useful.  I do use it a lot.

CNNfn

Use e-trade Sector-Industry-Company tree. Might be useful for top-down stock selection. E-trade Research

I found e-trade web site to be very well-organized

For Bottom-Up Approach

This table I picked up from e-trade This is good (but incomplete) summary of stock-picking (bottom-up) strategies.

It can be hard to quickly get a handle on all the major approaches to investing. Here's a handy summary to keep in your back pocket.

   Investing
   Approach
Famous Practicioners   What Drives Stock Prices?   Philosophy

FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS
"Classic Wall Street"   Wall Street brokerages   Earnings & Dividends   Earnings, stock price, and markets can be adequately forecasted. Buy where forecasted price (the "target price") is greater than current price by a satisfactory margin. Company's line of business is critically important.
Value Investing   Ben Graham, Warren Buffett (mostly)   Earnings & Dividends   Market undervalues some companies. These can be identified by analysis of their financial statements. Earnings and stock price cannot be forecast with useful precision. Company's line of business not highly relevant.
Growth Investing   Philip Fisher, Peter Lynch,
T. Rowe Price
Earnings & Dividends   Truly superior companies exist, are sometimes undervalued by markets, and can be identified by mostly non-financial research. Earnings and stock price cannot be forecast with useful precision. Company's line of business is critically important.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

Thomas Dines, Joseph Granville, Jack Schwager   Investor Expectations   Patterns in past price behavior of the security in question and the overall market can be used to direct profitable trading strategies. Some technical analysts also refer to a company's fundamentals in combination with its technical indicators.

EFFICIENT MARKET THEORY

"Strong" Form   Academics   Earnings & Dividends   No possible market-beating investment strategy exists. All information relevant to a stock's long-term price performance, including information not publicly available, is already present in the stock price for any given period of observation.
  "Weak" Form   Academics,
some mutual fund pros
Earnings & Dividends   Market-beating investment strategies may exist, but if so they are temporary, often eroded by transaction costs, and of no practical usefulness for the average investor compared to a "buy and hold" strategy.
